It is an environmentally friendly alternative to other leathers, manufactured from skins that are normally discarded by canneries. Fishskins are less of a pollutant than other leathers, because only the scales need to be taken off.
The fish that we use for leather tanning are not on the CITES endangered species list. CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between Governments that aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.
The special tanning process ensures the removal of all the fish oils so there is no odor. The tanning process can take up to 6 weeks. The leather can be used for anything that traditional leathers have been used to manufacture - footwear, jackets, gloves, belts, wallets, purses, and many other apparel and accessories. Each skin is unique and no two products are identical.
We offer these skins in either a ruffled suede or a glazed finish. Our fish leather skins have been used by others to manufacture a broad range of apparel and accessories.
We are offering sample packets, from our website. The actual fish skin colors can vary due to dye lots, and can appear different on the internet due to computer monitor characteristics. A color coded chart is included with the packet, and ordering using the sample swatches helps to insure the right color selection.
