Rosin is a complex mixture of mainly resin acids and small amount of non-acidic components. Its colour, depending on the source and method of processing, can vary from water white through dark red to almost black, with a tinge of red/pale. It is generally transluscent and brittle at room temperature. However, entire rosin is sold and purchased on the colour basis, the lightest colour bring the highest price. Gum Rosin has a very vast potential. It is used in paper, ink, rubber, paints and varnish, various adhesives, glue, soap, synthetic resins, chewing gum and other chemical industries.

Long oil alkyds are characterized by having an oil content greater than 55%.
