Crunchy mussel meat (krispy tahong)

This product is locally known as krispy tahong. It is very popular in the province of Cavite located in the Philippines. The scientific name for tahong is perna viridis. Historically, tahong was considered as pest in the Second World War until its discovery as food source. Tahong arrived in the Philippines in 1955 and was scattered in several areas, the first mussel farm was established in Kawit, Cavite wherein residents mastered the art of mussel farming and started propagating it in nearby coastal province in Cavite. It then became the primary source of livelihood for our townsfolk for several years.
